Formaldehyde CCM Ratings F1-F4 Explained: Don’t Be Fooled by the Numbers Game

CCM, short for Cumulative Clean Mass, refers to the cumulative clean mass.

If CADR represents purification speed, then CCM represents purification endurance. It measures how many milligrams of the target pollutant a purifier can cumulatively process over the filter’s lifespan. CCM is divided into two categories: particulate matter CCM and formaldehyde CCM, with grades from low to high being P1-P4 (particulate matter) and F1-F4 (formaldehyde) respectively.

Meaning of each formaldehyde CCM grade:

F1: ≥300mg
F2: ≥600mg
F3: ≥1000mg
F4: ≥1500mg

An easily overlooked fact: CCM is a “lower limit,” not an “upper limit”

The national standard requires the F4 grade to be ≥1500mg, but the total amount of formaldehyde a filter can actually process may be far higher than this figure. F4 is merely an entry threshold, not a performance ceiling. When making a purchase, besides checking whether F4 is achieved, greater attention should be paid to the actual amount and processing technology of the activated carbon in the filter.

The essential difference between adsorption and decomposition

A large number of purifiers on the market treat formaldehyde mainly through physical adsorption—activated carbon “traps” formaldehyde molecules in the filter’s pores. The problem with this approach is that once the activated carbon becomes saturated, some formaldehyde may be released back into the air when temperature or humidity changes.
