Selecting Air Sterilizers for Hospitals: An Interpretation of Core Indicators for Healthcare-Associated Infection Control

Healthcare-associated infection (HAI) control places far higher demands on air sterilizers than on ordinary commercial purifiers.

According to the “Standard for Hospital Air Purification Management” (WS/T 648-2019) and the “Technical Standard for Disinfection,” air disinfection equipment used in medical institutions must simultaneously meet the following core indicators:

1. Microbial kill rate

This is the core entry indicator for sterilizers. In aerosol chamber testing, the kill rate against Staphylococcus albus should reach ≥99.9%. Some devices must additionally pass inactivation tests for specific strains such as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

2. Virus inactivation capability

For common pathogens such as influenza viruses (e.g., H1N1) and enteroviruses, third-party-verified virus removal rate data is required. Viruses are far smaller in particle size than bacteria, placing higher demands on filtration precision and sterilization methods.

3. Air changes per hour

Based on the space volume and the device’s circulating airflow, the number of air changes per hour can be calculated. It is generally recommended that diagnosis and treatment areas have no fewer than 6 air changes per hour, while high-risk areas (such as fever clinics and observation rooms) should reach 10-12 air changes per hour or more.

4. Continuous operation reliability

Medical scenarios require equipment to operate continuously 24/7, without shutdowns due to overheat protection or motor lifespan limitations. This places requirements above commercial standards on motor selection, heat dissipation design, and motherboard durability.

5. Hygiene license for disinfection products

Legitimate air sterilizers must complete registration with competent authorities such as the Guangdong Provincial Health Commission and obtain a disinfection product hygiene license such as “Yue Wei Xiao Zheng Zi.” This is the legal basis for determining whether a device is a “purifier” or a “sterilizer.”
